Dr. Wahid Hanna, Honorees

Wahid Hanna, M.D.

Medical Hematology/Oncology, Professor of Medicine, University of Tennessee Medical Center

Wahid Hanna, M.D., graduated from medical school in Cairo, Egypt, in 1970. He completed his training in hematology and hematologic malignancies in Liverpool, England, followed by a fellowship in hematology-oncology at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Inspired by his grandmother’s passing from pancreatic cancer, Dr. Hanna dedicated his career to oncology. After his fellowship, he joined the University of Tennessee’s Division of Hematology Oncology, serving as Chief of Division from 1992 to 2020 and attaining the rank of full professor in 2002.

In recognition of his significant contributions, the Department of Medicine established the Wahid T. Hanna MD Endowed Chair of Medicine in 2023. A champion of clinical trials, Dr. Hanna revitalized the University of Tennessee’s clinical trials program in 1990, leading to its continued growth and success.

For his outstanding work and dedication, Dr. Hanna was honored as a “Healthcare Hero” by the Greater Knoxville Business Bureau. He has shared his expertise through lectures at local, national, and international conferences, and has authored or co-authored over 80 peer-reviewed articles and abstracts.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Hanna has enjoyed giving back to the community. One of his most memorable experiences was serving as drum major for the University of Tennessee Marching Band.

Dr. Hanna has received numerous awards and recognitions throughout his career, reflecting his exceptional contributions to the field of medicine.

Brook Saunders, M.D.

Gynecological Oncology, Covenant Health

Brook Saunders, M.D., is a renowned gynecological oncologist dedicated to providing compassionate and personalized care to his patients. With a wealth of experience and expertise in obstetrics and gynecology, coupled with a fellowship in gynecological oncology, Dr. Saunders is uniquely qualified to diagnose and treat a wide range of gynecological cancers.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Saunders has consistently been recognized for his exceptional patient care and his significant contributions to the field of gynecological oncology. His commitment to advancing medical knowledge is evident in his numerous publications, presentations at prestigious conferences, and mentorship of aspiring healthcare professionals.

Dr. Saunders firmly believes in a patient-centered approach to care, fostering open and collaborative relationships with his patients to develop personalized treatment plans that align with their individual needs and goals. His passion for providing support and guidance extends beyond the clinical setting, as he is dedicated to empowering patients throughout their cancer journey.

Ashley Stamper

In Memory: Devoted Wife, Loving Mother, and Cherished Friend

Ashley Stamper’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of faith, family, and friendship. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend, cherished by all who knew her. Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church was her spiritual home.

Ashley’s passion for life was evident in everything she did. She loved watching her sons play sports, finding joy in their triumphs and providing unwavering support. Her own athletic pursuits, including tennis and golf, kept her active and engaged. She was a dedicated member of the Knoxville Garden Club, nurturing her love for nature and cultivating beautiful surroundings.

Her friendships were deep-rooted and enduring. She cherished her long-standing connections with the Tequila Mockingbird Book Club, finding solace and companionship in shared literary experiences. At Cherokee CC, she was affectionately known as the “unofficial greeter and Mayor,” welcoming newcomers with open arms and fostering a sense of community among its members.

Music was another passion of Ashley’s, and she found joy in listening to the soulful melodies of Morgan Wallen and Eric Church.

Despite the personal challenges she faced, Ashley’s unwavering spirit and selfless nature shone through. She fought bladder cancer for 36 years with quiet courage, never letting her illness define her. Even when she faced a brief battle with breast cancer, she maintained her grace, resilience, and positive outlook.

Ashley was the epitome of a Southern lady, embodying the values of kindness, compassion, and unwavering strength. Her legacy will continue to inspire and uplift those who knew her, reminding us of the power of love, resilience, and the enduring human spirit.
